Whittier to Anchorage

The Park Connection Alaska operates between Whittier and Anchorage only on designated cruise ship days. A unique feature of this handy transfer is that it connects with our Park to Park route continuing on to Talkeetna and Denali National Park. It’s the only option for travel between Whittier and Talkeetna/Denali in one day, and an excellent way to kick off your post-cruise adventure. Tap below to see more from the trip out of Whittier.

The trip from Whittier to Anchorage covers 60 miles and generally takes about two hours. The journey begins with the 2.5-mile-long Anton Anderson Memorial tunnel through the Chugach Mountains to Portage Valley. Once you’re through, and if the weather permits, you can see hanging glaciers all through Portage Valley. The motorcoach then turns onto the scenic Seward Highway along the Turnagain Arm. Watch for eagles, moose, Dall sheep, and beluga whales. The highway passes by Girdwood, home to the Alyeska ski area. Passing Bird Creek, keep an eye out for fishermen (and maybe even a bear or two) during the salmon run. Shortly after passing Potter Marsh you’ll see the first traffic light, signaling your arrival in the big city of Anchorage.
